As season premiere of “Cake Boss” kicks off on Monday night, Buddy Valastro and the gang from Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken are off on another season of over-the-top cakes and that special type of personal interaction that makes reality TV "real."
South Orange and Maplewood “cake bosses,” have all the talent, many of the challenges, but do it without a television camera. Patch asked a few local bakers to recall their great cake challenges and to tell Buddy, if they could, what they'd like to see Carlo's Bakery achieve.

After signing into Facebook, Sinclair Community College student Miriam Crane noticed she had a notification.“Notifications are a regular occurrence on Facebook,” Crane said. “But this notification was different.”Different because Crane was not being notified of a pending friend request, a status update or a new message—she was being notified because she had been added to a new Group. A group to which she never gave her consent to belong.While Facebook offers personal freedom to add, invite or deny friend requests, new Groups allow friends to be added into a group without their consent. Once Crane was in the group, she had a dilemma. She realized she knew none of the other members in the group.But Facebook said it has provided a solution to this dilemma. Members can leave groups, by clicking, “Leave Groups” located on the right side of the screen. This terminates members from being in the group and on the group member’s list.

The Eastern US has had lots of snow this winter and students have been busy checking Snow Day Calculator. The developer of the web site, David Sukhin, uses weather.gov and additional information provided by the user to predict the probability that a school will be closed in the next two days. Some of the information provided by the user is subjective so the probability may change depending on how the user answers these questions: leniency of the administration, special event or activity and hype for a snow day. In case you wondered, there is no chance that schools in Key West FL will be closed today because of snow!
PS Just after I wrote this I discovered that WBUR, Boston University’s radio station and an NPR station in Boston, had interviewed David Sukhin. He is 16 and a junior in high school. When he was in sixth grade he devised an algorithm that would predict whether his school district would cancel school. Thus began the Snow Day Calculator.
